University United Methodist Church Music Programs
The strong tradition of the music programs at University United Methodist
Church has served as a constant unifying element in the life of the church and
the East Lansing community. Because of the close proximity of the church to
Michigan State University, members of the congregation, choirs and participants
in special music presentations include highly trained professors and students of
vocal and instrumental music. Successful junior high and high school music
programs in the community have also contributed to the strength of UUMC music
presentations. When added to the highly talented volunteer force that is the
backbone of the church music programs, the result is an outstanding and unique
collaboration.
UUMC music programs draw on a wealth of talent that spans young and old, and a
variety of music selections that reach across many cultures. We invite you to be
a part of the diverse and exciting music community that is available to you at
UUMC. Current UUMC Music Programs Include:
Chancel Choir
The Chancel Choir at University United Methodist Church has enjoyed a strong
membership from its beginning in 1957. Today the choir thrives as the main
presenting ensemble of the church, singing an anthem and introit, prayer and
benediction responses weekly throughout the school year (Sept. – May). Twice per
year the choir presents a major work, or a collection of pieces in an extended
service of music. Recent programs have included Handel’s Messiah, Fauré’s
Requiem and other more contemporary selections with orchestra. The choir
welcomes new members throughout the year and childcare is available for the
weekly Wednesday evening rehearsals as requested.
Celebration Ringers
The Celebration Ringers have been an integral part of the worship services at
University United Methodist Church for over twenty years. Currently, the bells
ring on the third Sunday of each month during the school year (Sept. – May), but
rehearse weekly on Wednesday evenings (childcare is available). The Celebration
Ringers also participate in the annual “Spring Ring”, a local hand bell workshop
that occurs in March, and present a Welcome Advent concert on the first Sunday
evening of Advent. New members are welcome and can perform as full or substitute
positions within the choir.
Children’s Choir
Involvement in Children’s Choir is a fun way for kids in kindergarten through
fifth grade to learn the fundamentals of music and be introduced to performing,
all in an encouraging environment. The Children’s Choir presents an anthem in
worship on the second Sunday of each month and on special occasions throughout
the school year (Sept. – May), and rehearses weekly for thirty minutes
immediately following the Sunday morning worship service. New members are
accepted throughout the year.
