Student Goodie Bag Sundays
A bi-annual tradition of the Higher Education/Campus
Ministry Work Area has been organizing Student Goodie Bag Sundays.
Timed to correspond with exam weeks at MSU and LCC, members
of the congregation are asked to prepare “goodie bags” that
are distributed by members of the Higher Education/Campus Ministry
Work Area to students following Sunday service on the week of
their Fall and Spring Semester examinations.
The next Student Goodie Bag Sunday is
April 29th, 2007.

Have a Heart Brunch
Each year, on the 1st Sunday of February, the Higher
Education / Campus Ministries Work Area hosts the annual
“Have a Heart Brunch” at UUMC. The proceeds from this
luncheon are used to help fund Wesley Foundation activities.
This past February 4th, $644.75 was raised during the brunch
to help fund in part the students' spring break work trip to
New Orleans, Louisiana.
The next Have-A-Heart Brunch will be February
3, 2007

Scholarship & Christian Service /
Merit Award
Each year the Higher Education /
Campus Ministries Work Area grants merit awards for
Scholarship and Christian Service for outstanding
students in the UUMC/Wesley community. The 2007
recipients of these merit awards will be decided on
April 16th.
Student Loans Available Now
Scholarship applications open to students who find they
need additional funds for the semester beginning in
January can apply for a United Methodist Student loan. A
college student who has been a member of a United
Methodist Church for one year is eligible to borrow up
to $2,500 in any calendar year at a 6 percent interest
rate, lower than the current federal Stafford Loan rate
of 6.8 percent or ParentPlus at 8.5 percent. A student
who wants to borrow must be attending an accredited
degree program full time and have a 2.0 ( C average).
Since loans are based on a calendar year, even a student
who borrowed the maximum $2,500 in fall 2006 is eligible
for another loan. However, a student who borrows $2,500
for the winter/spring semester would be unable to borrow
again for fall 2007. United Methodist student loans is
that the money can be used for any college-related
expenses - child care, transportation, meals - not just
direct costs such as tuition and books.
Click "Loans and Scholarships" near the top of this page
to find more information.
In 2006 the Higher Ed Committee gave out three scholarships
to students entering their first year in college and one
scholarship to a student already attending MSU and they
were: Bradley Kim Kern, Emily Bell Forrest, Alexander James
Plum, and Kathryn Lynn Scott.
Each year the Higher Education Committee also sponsors a
seminary student(s) when the need is there. Currently the
Higher Ed Committee and UUMC are looking for a candidate
to provide support to as they pursue a life in ministry

Van Project
UUMC’s Higher Education/Campus Ministry
Work Area has engaged in a two (2) year joint venture to
obtain $50,000 towards the purchase of two (2) new vans
to replace the UUMC/Wesley Foundation van that is increasingly
becoming unreliable. The van has become a crucial tool for
our joint UUMC/Wesley Foundation ministry with college students
and is also used by other UUMC programs such as MYF and
Elderberries.
One new van has already been purchased
through funds obtained through donations, parking monies,
and gifts from two estates. The new van can be seen outside
and was a wonderful deal at just under $20,000 for a 2005
vehicle with around 15,000 miles on it.
The goal of a second van was achieved through a donation
of a van by another local church. This van should join
the others in the parking lot this winter and both new
vans will receive new lettering to publicize our church
and identify them to Wesley riders.

UUMC and Wesley Foundation
Connection Luncheons
Connection Luncheons between
University United Methodist Members and Wesley
Foundation students have kicked off in 2007. The first
luncheon was offered on January 21st this year and was
attended by about 35. There was a great amount of
conversation and a round of story telling for whoever
was up for it to break the ice. It was a wonderful
success and there will be more planned for the future.
Watch the Hi-Ed Webpage and the One-Stop-Sign-Up for
more information on upcoming dates. A big "Thank You" to
all who participated in the first luncheon for making it
such a success

Host Families for Wesley
Students
The Higher Education
Committee and the Wesley Foundation are in search of Host
Families that want to get to know the Wesley Students and
help the student feel more comfortable away from home and
within the church by forming a lasting relationship. Once
paired the Host Family can invite the student over for dinner
or another activity to strike up conversation and start
building a bond. This program has been very successful in
the past in forming life long bonds between Host Families
and Wesley Foundation Students.
Please Contact a
Member of the Higher Education Committee if you are interested
and start getting to know the Wesley Students that make
UUMC their home away from home.
