Higher Education/Campus Ministry Work Area Minutes

Tuesday, December 12, 2006

Present: J.J. Burchman, Monty Engelmann, Christi Hemming, Larry Switzer, Tim Tuthill, John Ross Thompson, Ian Weibel.

1. Devotion.

Monty discussed the four legged Methodist stool analogy and its application to the HiEd mission.

2. Continued support for Wesley, Letter to Bishop. (Monty)

Monty admitted that he wasn't able to get to it and asked for a volunteer to write a draft. J.J. said he would try.

3. Budget analysis (Monty)

We discussed the various priorities for our projected program and decided on the ones we could give up. (At the CoM budget meeting the following night, $10K was to be extracted from the program areas and we gave up everything except the Peer Minister Support for Wesley [$2K]. We also gave back a $0.5K scholarship.)

4. The Wernette Scholarship and the endowment fund (Monty)

Monty contacted Victor and he was satisfied to have the $1.5K divided into three scholarships given over a three year (plus or minus) period. We need to compose the application forms for this new scholarship.

5. Reports and review of our HiEd program.

     A. Africa U. Support ( )

           No report.

     B. Budget (Monty)

           See above.

     C. College/University Student-UUMC Roster (Christi)

We received four names and addresses from our appeal. Christi sent each a "Goody Bag" Wendy's gift certificate. We need to do more to expand the list.

     D. Goody Bag Sunday, April 29, 2007 (Jessica & Toni)

Goody Bag Sunday Dec. 10th went well and there were sufficient numbers of goodies for all the students at service and the evening Wesley gathering. We need to make sure our appeal gets out on time next April!

     E. Have-A-Heart Brunch- February 4 (Monty)

Monty will ask Linda Mikols if she will be willing to do the brunch again. If she is unable to do it, Jessica will help us pull it off. Proceeds will again be used to support the Spring Wesley work trip.

     F. Host Family/Friend project (John)

We propose to put on a luncheon for students and congregation members who wish to explore some level of direct interaction. The luncheon is proposed for Jan. 21, 2007 after church. Participants will be asked to sign up on the One Stop. Seating will be non-random, students and church members mixed. An activity guide will be developed to facilitate information sharing among table members. Name tags will be required. Ian volunteered Jessica to help plan the meal. Announcements for the bulletin and Tower Alert should go in the weeks of the 7th and 14th.

     G. Merit Scholarships, (Monty)

Applications will be available in early January. We need to gather a list of the graduating H.S. seniors.

     H. Methodist Universities and College information &

The final report we made for the annual meeting, will be integrated into our existing web page. All of the program area reports will be put on the web to give a more complete picture of the church's program.
