Student Goodie Bag Sundays

A bi-annual tradition of the Higher Education/Campus Ministry Work Area has been organizing Student Goodie Bag Sundays. Timed to correspond with exam weeks at MSU and LCC, members of the congregation are asked to prepare “goodie bags” that are distributed by members of the Higher Education/Campus Ministry Work Area to students following Sunday service on the week of their Fall and Spring Semester examinations.

The next Student Goodie Bag Sunday is April 27 2008.

Have a Heart Brunch

Each year, on the 1st Sunday of February, the Higher Education / Campus Ministries Work Area hosts the annual “Have a Heart Brunch” at UUMC. The proceeds from this luncheon are used to help fund Wesley Foundation activities. Last February 3rd, $523 was raised during the brunch to help fund in part the students' spring break work trip to New Orleans, Louisiana.

The next Have-A-Heart Brunch will be in February 2009.

Scholarship & Christian Service / Merit Award

Each year the Higher Education / Campus Ministries Work Area grants merit awards for Scholarship and Christian Service for outstanding students in the UUMC/Wesley community. The 2008 application cycle will begin January 2008.

Student Loans Available Now

Scholarship applications open to students who find they need additional funds for the semester beginning in January can apply for a United Methodist Student loan. A college student who has been a member of a United Methodist Church for one year is eligible to borrow up to $2,500 in any calendar year at a 6 percent interest rate, lower than the current federal Stafford Loan rate of 6.8 percent or ParentPlus at 8.5 percent. A student who wants to borrow must be attending an accredited degree program full time and have a 2.0 ( "C" average). Since loans are based on a calendar year, even a student who borrowed the maximum $2,500 in fall 2007 is eligible for another loan. However, a student who borrows $2,500 for the winter/spring semester would be unable to borrow again for fall 2008. United Methodist student loans is that the money can be used for any college-related expenses - child care, transportation, meals - not just direct costs such as tuition and books.

Click "Loans and Scholarships" near the top of this page to find more information.

In 2007 the Higher Ed Committee awarded four scholarships to students entering their first year in college. They were: Rachel Scott Gladstone, Katherine Herrington, Kathryn Marie Jones and Eryn Venier. Amber Schultz, an MSU student, was awarded the first Pauline Wernette Memorial Award in an education related program.

Each year the Higher Education Committee also sponsors a seminary student(s) when the need is there. Currently the Higher Ed Committee and UUMC are looking for a candidate to provide support to as they pursue a life in ministry

Parking Project

UUMC’s Higher Education/Campus Ministry Work Area completed a two (2) year joint venture to purchase a new van to replace the existing UUMC/Wesley Foundation van which became increasingly unreliable. A van is a crucial tool for our joint UUMC/Wesley Foundation ministry to provide transportation to college students, youth groups and Elderberries. The new van was purchased with funds received from donations, parking monies, and gifts from two estates. The new van is now appropriately labeled with the UUMC and Wesley Foundation names and the Cross and Flame symbol. Funds for the signage were provided by the HiEd van project parking money.

UUMC and Wesley Foundation Connection Supper

A Connections Supper with University United Methodist Members and Wesley Foundation students will be tried this March 30, 2008. Our first Conections luncheon was offered on January 21, 2007 and was attended by about 35. There was a great deal of conversation and a round of story telling for whoever was up for it to break the ice. It was a wonderful success. The supper venue is exploring meeting possibilities that will be more convenient to students by connecting at their usual Sunday meeting time. Watch the Hi-Ed Webpage and the One-Stop-Sign-Up for more information on upcoming dates. Make plans to get to know our Wesley students.
