The Education Mission of UUMC

The Church is the community of God’s people--a people called to serve God and called to live together in true Christian community as a witness to the character and values of God’s Kingdom.  The Church is the agent of God’s mission on earth.

As the people of God, we have five primary relationships.  These relationships are the global sandbox within which we are to work out our faith and strive for maturity as individuals, families, and community.

We have a relationship to God who cares, to God who commands us to not only love God, but to love ourselves and others. Jesus’ teachings and example models what God intends for all human beings.

We have a relationship to ourselves as persons with passionate expectations, with a desire to act upon our world, and with a willingness to build upon this interaction in order to learn what we can become in terms of ultimates;

We have a relationship to others with similar and dissimilar passions and expectations, persons who have a right to share in the world’s resources, persons who need to have the opportunity to thrive.  In these relationships we are called to honor, respect, and to be generous;

We have a relationship to the physical environment and to its several ecosystems that provide for the global material and economic foundation of all peoples; and

We have a relationship to the whole of human culture that shapes the mindsets, attitudes, values, and structures that enable the whole of humanity to thrive physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually, morally, and spiritually.

These five relationships define and circumscribe our mission in the world.  We pray, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done..”  Others hope for it.  The people of God work for it.  We have in our possession a vision of what we can become and a set of values to guide us.  We also have in our possession many resources.  Guided by our vision of what we can become and our values that guide us in relationship, we endeavor to bring our resources to bear upon human need.

Jesus, our Master Teacher, took these several thoughts and reduced them to two powerful statements.  He said: FEED MY SHEEP and LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU.

The entire educational program of UUMC, with its emphasis on both insight and action, aims to do just that!
